What items may be touched?

We encourage guest to touch, with reasonable care, just about everything. That is, after all, half the fun. The only items that are strictly off-limits for touching are the Native American artifacts on the top shelf of the display cabinet in the southwest corner of the living room (this is the cabinet with double glass doors).

Cabinet Display Lights

The LED display lights in the cabinets and over the aircraft carrier behind the sofa are on timers and should go off around 11:30 pm and come back on around 8:30 am. The lights in the armoire are on a motion sensor and will turn on with motion and then turn off automatically.

Weapons in the Home

There are currently 3 antique firearms in the house/carriage house. These are real guns but they are for practical purposes not able to be fired and are unloaded. You are welcome to pick them up and examine them, but treat them with care. They are not toys and even though you know they are not loaded, never aim a firearm at another person - EVER! Minors should NOT handle them without an adult present.

There are several swords in the house/carriage house. All have historic significance. They are also so dull they could not cut butter. They are, however, pointed and they could cause harm if not handled properly. Minors should NOT handle them without an adult present.

Which Fossils in the House Are Real?

That's an easy question. They are all real. In some cases, the Woolly Mammoth tusks for example, the fossils have been stabilized with a synthetic coating to protect and preserve them. But the are 100% real.

What's Up With That Old TV? Does It Work?

Yes, but it can be a little finicky. It is a 1958 Philco Predicta. Instructions for use can be found here.

Using the mechanical items in the house

These include the Edison Amberola, Edison Home Phonograph, Victor Victrola, pump organ, Home Music Box, etc. We do our best to maintain these in working condition. For those with a wind-up motor, please scan the QR code near the item and follow instruction.

Using the 1930's radio on the ice box in the kitchen

The radio has been updated electronically, but remains virtually unchanged since it was new. Historic audio has been captured and stored on an MP4 player that is connected to an AM radio transmitter that broadcasts the signal.

To play the radio:

Turn the far left knob about a quarter turn, and then wait
After about 30 seconds, the internal vacuum tubes will warm-up and the radio will begin to play.
You may need to fine-tune into our station by turning the far right knob
The audio is about an hour-long loop dating from the mid 1930's to 1967, all in chronological order.
Always turn off the radio when not in use.

Using the Bluetooth Speaker

You are welcome to use the Harmon Kardon Bluetooth speakers in the house. Follow these instructions to connect:

Look for "HK Onyx Studio 3" in your phone's Bluetooth connections
If it does not appear on your phone, try pushing the button with the Bluetooth icon on the upper left of the speaker
Once connected, you will hear an audible confirmation from the speaker.

Trash Disposal

There are green trash cans across the driveway you may use.

Parking

Parking is on the street only. We suggest parking on Ave. R to avoid bird droppings, but you may park directly in front of the house as well.

Check-Out Procedure

Check-out is at noon. If we are vacant the day following your departure date, we welcome you to check-out as late as you like. I usually will let you know if a late is possible, but if I do not and you wish to check-out late, please message me for approval
Please leave any pillows or blankets you use out so our make-ready crew know to wash them.
When you leave, just lock the door and drop the key in the mailbox next to the front door. And if possible, message me so I can send someone over to retrieve it.
