Celebrate the holidays 1822's style at the historic 1847 Powhatan House
The Galveston Garden Club not only reached its fundraising goal, but we have exceeded it. To date, we have received gifts and pledges totaling $12,050. By attaining our goal, we have unlocked a $10,000 gift. This means Phase 2 of the Powhatan Project has raised $22,050.
WORK HAS ALREADY BEGUN!
Progress has been fast. In less than 30 days, we have painted the west side of the house, replaced the HVAC system in the downstairs, and completed the repairs to the front railings, balusters, and porch steps. See the progress in the video below.
There is no reason to stop now! Today the 1847 Powhatan House looks better than it has in over 2 decades, there is still a long way to go.
Our next challenge will be to rebuild the back balcony, including carpentry work, applying new roof material to the balcony deck, and painting the surrounding area.
The Galveston Garden Club is an all-volunteer nonprofit organization. We have no paid staff and we "pinch our pennies." As we restore the house and rebuild the Club, we are dedicated to utilizing our limited resources wisely.
How We Use Garden Club Funds
The only expenditures authorized by the Board of Directors from the general fund are to pay the utilities and insurance related to the 1847 Powhatan House. These funds are derived from membership dues and profit from fundraising events like the Pansy Sale and Caladium Sale. We pay no speaking fees and refreshments at meetings are provided by volunteers.
Donations received through the Powhatan Project are used specifically for the restoration of the Powhatan House. We utilize volunteer labor when appropriate and often receive significant discounts from local vendors. Simply stated, our pledge to you is that we will use every penny judiciously.
