Welcome to the Galveston Garden Club

The Galveston Garden Club is one of the oldest garden clubs in Texas. Our mission is to teach and inspire a love of gardening, to do good in our community, and to preserve and maintain the historic 1847 Powhatan House. The club meets on the second Thursday of each month, September through May, at the Powhatan House at the corner of 35th Street and Avenue.

Our theme for 2024/2025 is "Back to Our Roots." It is a renewed focus on all things gardening. Our monthly meetings will feature some of the most knowledgeable and talented guest speakers and they are always free to all.

All meetings are held at the 1847 Powhatan House located at 3427 Avenue O. The Galveston Garden Club purchased this amazing house in 1965 to be used as a headquarters and meeting space. Just as 2024/2025 brings a renewed focus on gardening, it also brings a renewed commitment to repair, restore, and preserve this historic treasure.

A journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step, and while there are many miles to go, the first steps have been taken. We have addressed the most critical issues with the roof and painted the front of the house. This Fall, we kickoff our Double Your Dollars Pledge Drive. A private donor has offered the Galveston Garden Club a $10,000 gift if we can secure matching funds.

Above: Watch our progress. Using only donations and volunteer labor, the front of the house was painted in the Summer of 2024. So much more to do, but a great first step.

Help the Galveston Garden Club Keep and Maintain the Historic 1847 Powhatan House

If you believe preserving historic places is important, that keeping such places open and available for public benefit has value, that a vibrant Galveston Garden Club can teach and inspire a love of gardening and play a role in beautifying the Island, then please consider making a pledge.

Let's be honest; our backs are against the proverbial wall. The 1847 Powhatan House is decaying before our eyes and for decades, the Galveston Garden Club has lacked the resources necessary to reverse this course. And now, time is up. Without an immediate infusion of capital, it will become necessary to sell this house.

WE CAN FIX THIS!

With your support, we can make enormous strides in the restoration of the 1847 Powhatan House and The Galveston Garden Club. If we can raise $10,000 by the end of the year, we will receive an additional $10,000 donation. $20,000 will allow us to:

  • Paint the front and west sides of the house
  • Repair and paint porch railing
  • Install new HVAC (air conditioning)  downstairs

Please Pledge Today! Your pledged donation will only be activated when we reach our fundraising goal of $10,000.
